Ravi S. Bhalla

Ravi Bhalla has practiced law for 18 years, previously working for two New Jersey law firms as well as his own practice. In his legal career, Ravi has developed a reputation as a results-oriented litigator and trial attorney, developing expertise in the areas of commercial litigation, white-collar criminal defense, land labor and employment, and land use and redevelopment law. Over his career, Ravi has represented clients through trial verdict in state and federal courts in New Jersey, in both civil and criminal matters. In 2009, Super Lawyers magazine selected Ravi to its list of “Rising Stars” in the legal profession.

Among Ravi’s successes in court are a successful “no cause” verdict after a three-week jury trial in which he represented a energy company in complex commercial dispute involving the Consumer Fraud Act and other common law claims. The trial outcome resulted in a successful defense of a $3.5 million claim for damages.   At the trial level, Ravi also successfully represented a corporate executive accused of violations of the New Jersey Water Pollution Act, which resulted in an acquittal after a two-week trial, the result of which received media coverage statewide.

Ravi has also earned a reputation as a civil rights attorney, particularly with respect to advocating for the rights of Asian-Americans and other communities of color in a wide range of matters, including claims under public accommodation laws, hostile work environment, excessive force and related claims. Over the years, Ravi has developed experience in both prosecuting civil rights claims as well as representing management and public entities in civil rights matters.  He is also well-versed in local government law, with years of experience representative elected and other public officials in prerogative writ matters and similar challenges to local government action.

Ravi gained national recognition in 2003 for his legal advocacy after suffering a violation of his own constitutional and civil rights during a jail visit to a client. The incident motivated him to lead a successful campaign to reform the federal government’s visitation policies at correctional facilities nationwide.

Ravi was elected Hoboken’s 39^th mayor in 2017 and was re-elected in 2021. He is New Jersey’s first Sikh mayor, as well as the first elected mayor in the United States who is a visibly practicing Sikh. He served on the Hoboken City Council from 2009 to 2017.
